Jim Butler

I went to a PV at Cambridge last night, for an exhibition of work by one of my old tutors, Jim Butler. It showed a series of his typographical screenprints based on drawings of shop signs in Budapest, Cadiz, Rome, Nice, Porto and Cambridge. These screeprints formed an A-Z and are also the basis for a series of alphabet books.
It was very inspiring to see simple yet strong compositions with a unified colour palette of well observed found typography. I was also very interested in seeing the different stencils and materials he used to create the work.
